The Ladders Resume Writing Service – Scam or Not?

Update 2010: More from the ‘Ask the Headhunter’ blog – TheLadders: Job-board salary fraud?

Head over to the Ask the Headhunter blog and make sure you read the anonymous comment from a resume writer from TheLadders.com.

(fourth comment down)

“Yes, they do charge very high prices and, if the client is lucky, he or she will be assigned to a writer who truly cares about the client and not just about throwing together some poorly written bit of fluff in order to move on to the next assignment.”

Wow, so after a jobseeker drops $600+, they MIGHT get lucky and get someone who cares. Oh that’s comforting.

I saved the post as a PDF just in case this “employee” decides it was career suicide to write that about an employer online and removes his/her post. You can get it here: TheLadders’ Marc Cenedella makes a phone call

It looks like that quote was taken out of context, especially considering the fact that the poster (Jennifer Anthony) is none other than the first person recommended to perform someone’s resume rewrite. Looks like a pretty subjective self-promotion by trying to bash the competition. I also know for a fact that at least one of the writers you mentioned as “rockstars” is actually a resume writer for TheLadders.com.

    • Wow. It looks like someone has nothing better to do than comment on a post made almost two years ago. But I’ll bite. I’m in a snarky mood today.

Self-promotion? Well, duh! It is my business blog. ;) At least I don’t spend thousands (or dare I say, millions) on an advertising budget to bring in clueless jobseekers by the droves just to churn out crappy resume templates. As a matter of fact, I don’t spend a dime on pay per click advertising but apparently, the Ladders has it all down to a science because,

Here at TheLadders.com, knowing that the marketplace is based on the Internet traffic, it can change really quickly, and over the course of a quarter or two, the market, and the costs can change drastically. As such, we try to run tests to assess the look of the market place at least once or twice a year. Knowing the cost curves is imperative to being able to make good decisions about what position to be bidding for, as well as how you should be splitting up your spend between content and search.

And yes, I know some writers on my Resume Rockstars page still write for the Ladders. But I have seen the work of each of these people individually and I respect them and what they can do individually. You may also notice when you follow the links from my page that they are not affiliate links. I do not earn an income on my referrals.

Here’s the thing that makes me awesome. I am an in individual. I’m one of the best at what I do. I present information on this blog. Technically, I haven’t been writing posts lately because I’ve been busy, but I still share articles from other writers. Why? Because I genuinely give a crap. I genuinely want jobseekers to succeed, with or without paying me. I also offer free resume reviews WITHOUT filling up my potential clients’ inboxes with weekly junk “newsletters” reminding them that they should pay for a professional resume writing service. I don’t like sales tactics and don’t have to do that.. People can appreciate my expertise and hire me, or they can go elsewhere.

I don’t earn a six-figure income doing this, but I get by, I love what I do, and that’s enough for me. :) Now don’t you have anything better to do than annoy me about a post made nearly two years ago?
